Scutellaria ovata, commonly known as heart-leaved skullcap, is a pubescent mint family member featuring snapdragon-like, tubular, two-lipped, blue-purple flowers that bloom in branched terminal racemes in May to September on square pubescent stems with ovate, crenate-serrate, rugose, heart-shaped green leaves. Typically, plants grow between 16 and 24 inches tall. The skullcap is native to Maryland, Kansas, Tennessee, Texas, and Mexico. Suitable for dry to medium, well-drained soils in full sun. Drought-tolerant. Rhizomes spread the plant. The plant proliferates from seed and self-seeds in the garden. Plants may go dormant after blooming when it is hot and dry during the summer.
