Calylophus drummondianus

The "Southern Belle Sundrop," native to Texas, is a member of the Evening Primrose family Onagraceae and has the delicacy of the Southern Belle. Still, it is hugely root-hardy and drought-tolerant. An evergreen, bushy subshrub brightens your garden as if bathed in southern sunshine. It thrives in full sun or partial shade and prefers well-drained soil. Calylophus grows woody at the base, with herbaceous stems that grow 18 inches tall and 24 inches wide. The papery, bright yellow flowers bloom almost year-round and are an excellent choice for adding bright pops of color to empty spaces in your landscape.

The prairie grasslands of Texas, Arizona, Oklahoma, and New Mexico are home to this plant, which is highly tolerant of heat and cold. The plant spreads by rhizomes and creates a carpet of color when planted with other perennials with similar water requirements, such as rosemary, sage, and lavender. Your garden will be filled with vibrant yellow flowers, attracting birds, bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators.
