Canada Wildrye

Elymus canadensis, which is also known as Canada wild rye, is a native grass in Texas that grows in clumps during the cool season. It is an ornamental bunch of grass that is admired for its arching spikes that look similar to wheat or rye. The spikes bloom in summer and stay visually attractive until winter. The grass typically grows in clusters that are 3-5 feet tall, featuring pointed, bluish-green to green leaves that clasp the stems at the bases. Greenish flowers appear in terminal, arching, bristly spikes, which gracefully nod and sway in the wind when mature, rising well above the foliage. During fall, the foliage and spikes turn tan and continue to provide visual interest throughout much of the winter. Sometimes, people refer to it as nodding wild rye.

Easily grown on average in dry to medium, well-drained soils in full sun. Adapts to a wide range of soils.
