The Rhus aromatica, also known as the Fragrant Sumac, is a Texas native shrub that adds a pop of color and a touch of aroma to any garden! This deciduous shrub is known for its low-growing, rambling habit and for spreading through root suckers to form thickets in the wild. Typically growing 2-4 feet tall (and sometimes reaching 6 feet) and extending up to 10 feet wide, this shrub is perfect for filling in open woods, meadows, and thickets. One of the best things about the Rhus aromatica is its stunning autumn leaves, which turn an attractive orange, red, and purple shade. Not only are the leaves beautiful, but they are also aromatic when bruised, giving off a fragrant scent (hence the species name). Although the leaves resemble those of the related poison ivy, the Rhus aromatica is a non-poisonous plant. In early spring, before the foliage, tiny yellow flowers bloom at the twig tips. Male flowers form in late summer and persist throughout the winter until they eventually bloom in spring. In late summer, female flowers give way to small clusters of hairy, red berries, which may persist into winter. These berries are attractive to wildlife. The Rhus aromatica is quickly grown on average, in dry to medium, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. It tolerates a wide range of soils except those that become poorly drained. So why not add a touch of aroma and a pop of autumn color to your garden with the Rhus aromatica.
