Buttonbush is a deciduous shrub that grows 6-12' tall and occasionally up to 20'. It is a multi-branched tree with an open-rounded habit. It has crooked and leaning branches irregular crowns, and produces balls of white flowers that resemble pincushions. The flowers are fragrant and tubular with five lobes, and they appear in dense, spherical, long-stalked flower heads about 1.5" in diameter. The flower heads attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and other insect pollinators. They mature into hard, spherical, ball-like fruits with multiple tiny two-seeded nutlets. The fruiting heads usually persist throughout the winter.

The ovate to elliptic glossy, bright green leaves of buttonbush are about 6" long and usually occur in pairs or whorls. The leaves emerge late in spring. The genus name of buttonbush comes from the Greek words kephale, meaning "head," and anthos, meaning "flower." Buttonbush is a handsome ornamental plant well suited to wet soils and a honey plant. It is common throughout Texas and can be found in moist open areas, low woods, thickets, swamps, upland sinkhole ponds, river bottomland, and stream/pond margins. Ducks, other water birds, and shorebirds are known to consume the seeds of buttonbush.
